Gustav Holst penned this great tune in 1911 and named it for his home village, Thaxted. Used in the Jupiter movement of his tone poem, The Planets, it has been the setting for many fine hymns, but this new text makes it clear that The Word of God Eternal, "far above all rival goods," is "uniquely good and true." It unfolds the nativity within the larger mission of Christ. Enjoy and share.
